In the summer of 2009, Jackie Enterline became Virginia Sea Grant’s first Science Communications Intern. During her eight week internship, she trailblazed a form of media with which we had little experience—online video.
University of Virginia’s Dr. Kristina Hill presented on ways cities around the world are using landscape architecture to adapt to sea level rise. Dr. Hill is a landscape architect, who considers how communities near water systems adapt to climate change. Her recent work looks at connects between community design and flood-related damage and pollution. Her book Water, Ecology and the Design of Cities is due out this year. Dr. Hill is Associate Professor and Director of Landscape Architecture Program at University of Virginia.
Coastal Virginia is one of the areas in the country most vulnerable to sea-level rise. With help from Sea Grant, VIMS researchers are helping Virginia communities predict and prepare for the increasingly frequent floods that climate change and rising seas will bring.
The new workforce in seafood processing is a growing population of seasonal migrant workers—almost all of them Hispanic. Virginia Sea Grant is helping these workers and the foods they process stay safe by providing specialized on-the-job training in Spanish.
