Local perspective enriches resilience research

To hear from communities firsthand, Ben Nettleton, a Commonwealth Fellow hosted by The Nature Conservancy (TNC), helped organize two workshops to better connect TNC with local residents on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. Nettleton organized workshops on the seaside in Wachapreague and on the bayside in Craddockville.

Preparing for oil spills in the mid-Atlantic
Workshops bridge gap between responders, researchers, and community

The workshop was one of a series of national workshops held to determine the needs of different coastal regions. At the mid-Atlantic workshop, 74 attendees from North Carolina up to Delaware represented aquaculture, tourism, public health, emergency response, academia, disaster research, and affected communities.

Tracking down a tricky nutrient: Fellow studies nitrogen cycling in the York River

Brianna Stanley, a Ph.D. student at VIMS, is studying the sources of urea in the York River and whether algae prefer urea over other forms of nitrogen.
Stanley is also studying methods to separate out urea dissolved in water so wastewater treatment plants can find new methods to remove more nitrogen before returning water to the York River.
