Virginia Sea Grant is a proud partner of the VIMS PERFECT NSF Fellowship, which brings graduate students into middle and high school classrooms as visiting scientists for a full school year. This June, PERFECT Fellows helped the College of William & Mary School of Education and VIMS welcome local high school students to campus to learn more about marine topics and careers through the GEAR UP program.

GEAR UP, Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, is designed to introduce students to the sciences through hands-on activities. These students, incoming seniors from Hampton and Phoebus High Schools, have been involved in GEAR UP since middle school.

The GEAR UP grant was secured by the Virginia Space Grant Consortium, in partnership with Hampton City Schools, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the Mariners’ Museum of Newport News. GEAR UP is made possible through funding from the U.S. Department of Education.
