Coastal Virginia has so much to offer, from the scenic views of the Chesapeake Bay to the long history surrounding the water. Chesapeake Environmental Communications (CEC) is working with partners to introduce a program modeled after a similar effort in Maryland to train watermen to develop their own tourism-based businesses. Headed by Paula Jasinski, the program benefits watermen looking to supplement their income as well as established members of the local tourism industry that can partner with the watermen. Virginia’s Watermen Tourism Training Program provides tools and resources for business development, storytelling and curriculum development, and ecosystem science. Watermen can use what they learn to take parties out on their boats or to speak at events highlighting the watermen’s heritage.
