Shellfish Aquaculture Continues Growth

Virginia’s shellfish growers sold 28.1 million oysters and 171 million clams in 2012, according to an annual survey of shellfish aquaculture operations in the state. Those numbers represent a 21 percent increase in oyster sales, while clam sales have remained fairly stable over the past few years.

Let’s make a meal: Competition, swordfish prep, and more highlight VIMS symposium

Yes, it’s O.K. to eat swordfish again. Recovery of this species that was once thought to be lost “is one of the great success stories of modern fisheries management.” That was the lesson from the spring Chefs’ Seafood Symposium recently held at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science in Gloucester Point.
