Science Writing Intern Covers VASG-Funded Research

By Katharine Sucher, Science Writing Intern

As Virginia Sea Grant’s (VASG) new science writing intern, Katharine Sucher will spend this summer spreading science to the public. By translating VASG-funded research into simple language, Katharine will broaden the reach and impact of researchers’ findings.

“If people aren’t aware of what research is happening, it might as well not be happening,” Katharine said. “Making science understandable to a general audience is the first step in creating an environmentally conscious community. That’s why Virginia Sea Grant is so important.”

As science writing intern, Katharine will also write bios for VASG’s interns, staff, and graduate fellows.

A native of Manassas, VA, Katharine will graduate from The College of William and Mary in 2015 with an undergraduate degree in English and minor in marketing. A former intern in the Smithsonian’s National Zoo’s Office of Communications, Katharine is passionate about sustainability and conservation. After graduation she hopes to pursue a career in environmental journalism or public relations. On campus she works as a consultant at William and Mary’s Writing Resources Center and serves in the mental health branch of Health Outreach Peer Educators.
