VIDEO: What is Barotrauma and What Are Sea Grant Researchers Doing About It?

Barotrauma occurs when a fish experiences a rapid change in pressure and generally occurs when retrieving fish from depths greater than 60 feet.

In 2015, Virginia Sea Grant partnered with Sea Grant programs in New Jersey and North Carolina and charter boat captains to test descending devices to improve survival of released fish experiencing barotrauma.
