For Brendan Rice, the best part of working with Virginia Sea Grant (VASG) was “gaining real-world experience that applied to my field of study.”

Brendan, a Virginia Commonwealth University student in business marketing, joined VASG as Event Planning and Management Intern in the fall to help with our annual event: The Project Participants’ Symposium. He was an integral part in putting on the most highly rated Symposium in the event’s four-year history.

Brendan supported the event from beginning to end, including managing the guest and RSVP lists, advising the event budget, and sourcing keynote speakers to leading event-day guest management and analyzing the post-event survey results.

“I was not expecting to put all the things I learned in marketing to use,” he said. “I gained many skills I expected and some I didn’t but will prove to be helpful for my future career.”

A Northern Virginia native, Brendan anticipates graduating from Virginia Commonwealth University in December 2013 and pursuing a career with a marketing or management consulting firm in the Boston area.
