Flooding threatens the City of Poquoson more than many coastal cities in Virginia. While this has provoked new property management practices, there remains a need to plan for resident evacuation and public safety during extreme flooding events. John Brubaker of Virginia Institute of Marine Science plans to teach city staff how to use TideWatch, a near-real time water level monitoring system established by VIMS in Back River. Brubaker hopes to better prepare Poquoson for storms to come through a workshop and subsequent education and training sessions as part of a yearlong project beginning in September 2010.
