Sometimes science communications means getting to go out into the field to interview scientists or even help collect samples.
For Kate Schimel tagging along on research vessels to interview VASG-funded scientists was her favorite part of the summer. Schimel, who studies biology at Reed College in Portland, Oregon, joined VASG as our 2011 Summer Science Communication Intern.
She spent the summer writing bios for VASG Fellows and extension staff, including an article about VASG’s new shellfish aquaculture specialist. Schimel also wrote in-depth articles about VASG research, including spadefish aquaculture, seagrass restoration, and terrapin turtles.
“The internship was an incredible value to me,” says Schimel. “It gave me experience in reporting on complicated science, something that would have been hard to get in any other way.” After she graduates, Schimel hopes to pursue a career in science communication.
Thanks, Kate, for all of your great work, and good luck in your junior year!
