Multimedia Intern joins Communications Department
Please welcome multimedia intern Mallory Huxford, who will work with the VASG communications team for the next few months. Huxford hails from Indiana and graduated from Ball State University in May, where she majored in photojournalism and minored in sociology.
“I just fell in love with talking to people and using the camera as a way to connect with others,” Huxford said. “I feel comfort and exhilaration at the same time when I’m behind the camera.”
Previously, Huxford served as a multimedia intern with the Cornerstone Center for the Arts in Muncie, Indiana, where she documented of the non-profit’s events and classes ranging from visual art, dance, theater, and martial arts. She also took photographs for the Ball State Daily News, and helped coordinate the Ball State Shoot For Good project, which documents volunteerism in the local community. Huxford said these experiences taught her the importance of “being a human being before you are a photographer” and establishing long-lasting connections with the people captured in her photojournalism.
In her role as a VASG multimedia intern, Huxford aims to refine her video and photography skills in the field.
“I’m really good at studio photography, but I’m not always going to be in a studio,” Huxford said. “I want to be able to take lighting and really work with it in an environmental setting, because you’re not always going to have the best lighting in those types of situations.”
Huxford said she looks forward to photographing Virginia’s coastal research and maritime industries—and sampling some fresh seafood too.
“I’ve never tried oysters, so bring it on,” Huxford said.
