Abby Lunstrum gained international insight living abroad in China, Denmark, and Latin America. Combining this global perspective with a background in science, Lunstrum thinks that spending her Knauss Fellowship with the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA)’s Office of International Affairs will suit her.
“I’m extremely excited about this position!” says Lunstrum. “It’s a perfect fit for my background in international research and marine science, and I’m really looking forward to learning about NOAA’s position on global issues and strategies to pursue those positions.”
As an international affairs fellow, Lunstrum won’t only be learning about NOAA’s international policies—she’ll also help develop them. Lunstrum will collect, analyze, and present information relevant to international policy issues, as well as represent NOAA at interagency meetings.
Lunstrum and five other Virginia graduate students will begin their yearlong Knauss Fellowships in February.
The Dean John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship program places students with host offices in the legislative or executive branches of government in Washington, DC. Fellows learn about the national policy decisions that affect ocean, coastal, and the Great Lakes resources while getting the opportunity to contribute their knowledge to current issues facing the nation. The National Sea Grant College Program established the program in 1979.
