The November 14 deadline for the Virginia Sea Grant (VASG) 2015-2018 Graduate Research Fellowship is fast approaching, and VASG Assistant Director for Research Susan Park is planning to visit partner universities to answer questions.
Yesterday, Park met with twelve Virginia Institute of Marine Science students interested in the fellowship program. Park and the students discussed fellowship opportunities, proposal requirements, how the review process will work, and proper “grantsmanship”—tips for how to write successful proposals.
Says Park, “We have been so pleased with the quality of students that have applied to the fellowship program; our fellows clearly have the potential to be leaders in their fields. And we hope that with our training, they will not only be excellent scientists, but they will continue to link their science to the needs of coastal communities.”
Park will also be at the following schools later this month and early October to give information sessions:
- Virginia Tech (12pm 9/19),
- Old Dominion University (12pm 9/23),
- University of Virginia (12pm 9/25),
- Virginia Commonwealth University (12pm 9/30), and
- George Mason University (12pm 10/2).
The purpose of the fellowship is to support exceptional graduate students who are engaged in research that furthers the goals of VASG. It will provide students with professional development opportunities focusing on science communication, the science-to-management process, adoption of innovation, and hands-on experience in translating research results to coastal and marine stakeholders.
The fellowship provides an award of up to $40,000 per year for up to three years for doctoral students and up to two years for masters students. VASG expects to fund between four and seven Fellowships for the 2015–2018 academic years. It is open to full-time graduate students at any Virginia academic institution who are engaged in coastal and marine research relevant to Virginia and the VASG strategic plan.
Proposals must be submitted online to VASG via the online proposal system, eSeaGrant, to the “2015-2018 VASG Graduate Research Fellowship” call by 5:00 p.m. EST on Friday, November 14, 2014.
