As an officer in the U.S. Air Force, Brandon Durant understands the challenges of communicating complicated topics to the general public.

This summer, as a Summer Science Communication Intern, Brandon is applying his experience and education in science communication and conducting focus groups and interviews to inform Virginia Sea Grant’s strategic communication strategy. He believes this experience will certainly come in handy as he moves on to work in the Air Force’s Public Affairs Office in the Pentagon.

“This internship has provided me the opportunity to practice communication research outside the classroom, which is an invaluable experience,” he says. “It is not everyday that an Air Force officer gets to be exposed to people outside the military structure. Interacting with so many intelligent and diverse people has truly been exciting and rewarding.” Brandon brings expertise and training in qualitative methods and strategic communications to the Virginia Sea Grant Communication Center at a time when it is crucial to shaping and designing our future communication efforts.

Brandon is currently a George Mason graduate student studying science communication. He plans to graduate this winter.

Virginia Sea Grant Science Communication Interns work with our Communication Center to bring scientific and technical information to non-scientists and decision makers.
