Research strategies that make a difference, professional skills development for tomorrow’s STEM workforce

Virginia Sea Grant is excited to bring together graduate students from across the Commonwealth with interest in coastal and marine disciplines for a daylong research symposium designed to spark scientific and professional imaginations, highlight cutting-edge graduate research, and expand professional networking channels.

Designed to showcase innovative coastal and marine research, communication strategies, and insights into the science-policy interface, the Graduate Symposium is a forum for researchers, policymakers, resource managers, and employers. Attendees will engage with coastal and marine science professionals from non-profit organizations, private industry bodies, as well as state and federal agencies.

Virginia Sea Grant invites students from all over the Commonwealth to register for the 2018 Graduate Symposium. This innovative educational and networking event will be held February 9, 2018 at Virginia Crossings Hotel & Conference Center.

Poster Submissions

The abstract submission deadline is December 15, 2017 11:59PM ET. Electronic submission should be submitted through the registration site . All abstracts must be received by the closing date noted above. Attendees are permitted only ONE poster abstract per submission. Submitted abstracts will be reviewed by the poster selection committee. Applicants will be notified by December 22, 2017.

Abstract Guidelines:

1. Full Name of Presenting Author 2. Email of Presenting Author 3. Additional Authors listed (Full Names and Associated Organization) 4. Title (limit of 15 words and be entered as one sentence) 5. Abstracts must be no longer than 200 words (~1500 characters) 6. Release of Abstract (by submitting your abstract you are agreeing to the publication of your abstract in conference-related materials)

Poster Guidelines:

The poster session is scheduled for 6 pm to 7:30 pm on Friday, February 9, 2018. Presenters are responsible for creating and printing their own posters. Poster session presentation day assignments will be distributed in January. Presenters are asked to stand by their poster during their assigned presentation time, and are also encouraged to be present during coffee breaks, lunch hours, etc. Our goal is to give your poster as much exposure as possible so you can make the most of your participation at the Symposium. If you cannot be present during your assigned time, please leave a note by your poster stating when you will be available to answer questions.

Posters can be set up in the Ballroom starting at 7:00 am Friday for previewing. We ask that all posters be displayed by the end of lunchtime on Friday. Guidance on where the posters will be set up will be given day before the symposium. Posters can only be attached using pins to pushpin walls.


Each poster will be displayed on one-half of an eight foot (2.44-meters) wide by four foot (1.22-meters) high board, with a two inch (5.08-centimeter) metal frame around the perimeter. Posters should not exceed 44 inches (116-centimeters) in height by 45 inches (112-centimeters) in width to fit within those dimensions. Two posters will be displayed on each wall. Mounting materials will be provided.

Reservations must be made by January 15, 2017 to guarantee the group rate of $124 per night.
