John Accordino of Virginia Commonwealth University is receiving funding from Virginia Sea Grant to create a development strategy for waterfront properties comprising 96.81 acres on the Severn River. The project will make use of student-faculty teams as well as the participation of Neal Barber, an expert in community development. Beginning in June 2014, the yearlong project will include data gathering, citizen engagement meetings, five graduate classes in the Master of Urban & Regional Planning Program at VCU where students will complete critical research or plan elements, and presentations to the Middle Peninsula Planning District Commission by the faculty-student team. The Commission can use the final report to inform decision-making and development, regardless of which course of action it chooses.
