LEADERSHIP: COLLABORATIVE TEAM SCIENCE & LEADERSHIP

Solving today’s grand societal challenges in coastal and marine environments, as well as other complex nature and society problems, demands collaborative, interdisciplinary team science that produces innovative, integrated breakthroughs and solutions that transcend individual disciplines, reaching a deeper level of knowledge integration. However, interdisciplinary team science has been hard to do well, and transdisciplinary outcomes challenging to reach. Virginia Sea Grant is currently building professional development training programs for graduate students, so they are prepared to address the most pressing coastal and marine challenges in the Commonwealth, the region, and the nation.

COLLABORATIVE TEAM SCIENCE TRAINING

VASG is currently designing and testing professional development training in collaborative team science. We hope to make this a regular offering for our fellows by 2018.

FIELD TRIPS

Everyday scientists working at the state and federal level shape important policy decisions impacting coastal Virginia. Virginia Sea Grant’s Policy Field Trips expose students to a range of marine-related, science-policy careers, and the critical professional skills and competencies needed for a successful career working at the science-policy interface.

Professional Development Resources

In VASG’s background research and ongoing construction of its program development training program, we have found a myriad online resources for students on everything from interviewing, and converting a CV to resume, to cover letters, and elevator introduction, etc. VASG has made a strategic choice to focus our professional development on science communication, awareness of science-policy interface issues, professional skills and networking capacity, and building collaborative team science and leadership skills. Nonetheless, many of these resources may be of general interest to Fellows and students, although VASG does not endorse or recommend these sites and their content.
