2017 Undergraduate Summer Science Writing Internship

Virginia Sea Grant (VASG) is pleased to announce a paid summer internship in coastal and marine science writing. The internship will provide an undergraduate student with training in science communication, and allow him or her to initiate new writing projects, and tell the story of how VASG brokers science to community stakeholders. The science writing intern will work directly with the staff of the VASG Communication Center to report and write pieces that communicate complex scientific information to non-scientists, and decision-makers. The intern’s articles about the work of VASG researchers, students, and staff will appear on the pending new VASG website, and spread through all of VASG’s social media channels and media outlets. The intern may also complete shorter writing and editing projects for VASG factsheets, brochures, or other communication products.

The science writing intern will be placed in a cohort consisting of a photographer/video journalist, and possibly a researcher. They will cover and evaluate their assignments as a unit. The internship offers students opportunities to develop their interviewing, analysis, reporting, pitching, and writing skills.

Any student, regardless of citizenship, who is enrolled in an undergraduate program in communication, journalism, science writing, basic science, or other related field at an accredited institution of higher education in the U.S., is eligible for the internship. All qualified students are encouraged to apply; however, qualified applicants from Virginia institutions will be given priority.

The intern will receive a $4,000 stipend for the 40-hour per week, 10-week summer internship located at VASG’s headquarters at Gloucester Point, along with reimbursement for assignment related travel. There is only one position available.
